Nepal Flood Appeal — a fundraising evening in Dorrigo

A glacier collapse has caused catastrophic flooding in the areas of Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading near the Nepal-Tibet border. The disaster has claimed many lives, with thousands still missing, and roads, bridges and other essential infrastructure destroyed — isolating many communities and making access to some areas particularly difficult.

We are holding an evening in Dorrigo in solidarity and support — music, food, and a traditional offering of light and chanting. Everyone is welcome.

The evening

Never Never Mind Cafe, 16 Cudgery St, Dorrigo Friday 11 September, 6 – 9pm $15 at the door, + donation

Where the money goes

Every dollar raised goes to Karuna-Shechen, a grass-roots community development, medical aid and disaster relief organisation with offices in Kathmandu, founded in 2000 by the Buddhist monk Matthieu Ricard.

They are already working in the worst-hit districts — distributing food and drinking water to families in temporary camps, and assessing needs for shelter, sanitation and medical care. Br. Tenzin has raised funds for their work before, notably after the 2015 earthquake, and we have been impressed by their preparedness and their “Dharma in action” approach.

If you can’t make the evening, giving directly is just as valuable — and your donation reaches the relief effort in full.

About Gaia Forest

If this is your first time hearing of us: Gaia Forest is a project on the mid-north coast hinterland of NSW, creating a space for personal retreat, mindfulness, meditation and nature connection — alongside forest restoration on the land itself.

Much of what we do sits at the meeting point of Buddhist practice and deep ecology: the recognition that care for one’s own mind and care for the living world are not two separate undertakings. An evening like this one is a small, practical expression of that.

You’d be very welcome to come and find out more — about the project, our upcoming events, or Br. Tenzin’s teaching schedule and resources.
